Showing Off Your SketchUp Inventory

It recently occurred to me that I could create display rooms of my furniture models in SketchUp. Im not sure what benefits I can achieve by doing this, but it is fun to assemble furniture in the context of the rooms in the house. I suppose this was partly an experiment - how many furniture pieces could I include before SketchUp bogs down. (I never reached a point of noticeable degradation in performance. )Yes, this creates big files, as these pieces of furniture are very detailed and full of complex surfaces. And I just scratched the surface, not applying textures, colors, and fancy room treatments.
Here is my redwood shed out back with included furniture. The shed - a timber frame construction - was designed in detail in SketchUp. Ive included several pieces of Shaker furniture installed there - a garden bench, blanket chest, cupboard, table, and Windsor chair.
Here is our family room that includes, a corner cupboard, Maloof chairs, lowboy, entertainment center, breakfast table, Windsor chairs, mahogany bookcase, and sideboard.

This is so much fun, I may just assemble furniture in all rooms of the house.

Left handed woodworkers

So I am looking for info on left handed and woodworking. Not, much on the tool side other than most tools are right handed, but here are a couple of bits of info:

"A left-handed individual was more likely to sustain an amputation both at home and at work. The left-handed were more likely to have a dominant hand amputation than were the right-handed (70% compared with 51%). These data suggest that left-handers have an amputation risk factor 4.9 times greater than that of right-handed people."

These were taken from "Is being left-handed a handicap? The short and useless answer is “yes and no.”"

Maybe they need to add a question to the shop test:
_____ I am left handed. 1) True 2) False

1 is disqualification.

Cool woodworking from Mark Yates

One of the real joys of doing Woodworking for Mere Mortals is being able to see the creativity of younger folks and show it off here. Well, I guess anyone younger than 40 is young folk to me, but in this case Mark Yates is 15. He lives in Tasmania and here is some of his work.

If you have a bandsaw, sooner or later you will get bandsaw box fever! Here is a fine example. Love the smooth, flowing design. Very organic looking, reminds me of a leaf. Love the knot in the top.

My wind spinner project! I mentioned this on Monday, but I just love the way you all are painting these things! BTW, in a follow-up to that video, I recommended using fishing spinners rather than that dog-leash type of swivel. I replaced mine and it spins much better.

Now this one goes back a couple years. Remember this? Its a little maze puzzle. They are fun to make and actually quite tricky to solve.

And what is it sitting on?  A natural edge side table. Mark made this and the bandsaw box out of  huon pine.

And finally, Marks shop. Thanks for the pictures and keep sawing!

Where should tire scraps go

Billion of rubber tires are produced yearly and through wear and tear become replaced. Many of these tires are burned and some end up in landfills. Tire’s are now recycled in various ways but may be somewhat tricky to recycle because they are composed of different elements. Elements contained in tires may be harmful to the environment when piled up in landfills they may be a fire hazard. The tires in the landfills take up space that can be used for other purposes. So, recycling tires in the form of furniture art seems like a great way to begin cleaning up the landfills. Much of the contemporary and modern art uses recycled items already. Worn out tires can and have been creatively reused as furniture and art pieces. The ottoman and chair below at first glance may appear as leather yet they are made out of recycled tires. They are perfect examples of recycled tires that functions work fabulous in most modern homes. Tire scraps should ultimately be removed from landfills and converted into functional pieces of furniture and pieces of art such as the interesting looking Buddha below.

Autumn Table Decor and a Vintage Industrial Table

Hello!  Weve been so busy lately so Im a little late to the table decor party but I finally had a chance to put everything together yesterday and wanted to share it here on the blog today.  I also built a new table that we are planning to give away at our shop grand opening during a drawing which Ill show you below.  First up, our fall table.....

I really like to keep things simple and natural, whenever possible.  I also tried to use everything I already had.  The only thing I bought for this table were the pumpkin colored napkins for a steal on ebay ($11 for a set of 8) and the faux wheat and candles.

To keep things natural I used wooden salad bowls and my bread boards as well as the little rosewood dipping bowls.  I love the small pop of color the pumpkin colored napkins provide.

To add a metal element to the table, I used vintage silver flatware, candle holders and salt and pepper shakers.

To continue with a farmhouse feel, I picked up some faux wheat at the craft store and placed it in one of my ironstone white pitchers.  Then I simply wrapped a piece of scrap burlap around it.

For the hutch, I added more faux wheat in a smaller milk pitcher and picked up some apples in the grocery store to put in my vintage dough trencher.  And of course, a couple of extra bread boards.  :)

My absolute favorite thing is the new rug my hubby bought for us for under the dining table.  Ive had my eye on this rug at West Elm now forever and they finally went on sale for only $129.99.  That is our kind of bargain.  :)

The vintage industrial table under the subway art is the table I put together yesterday.  I was thrilled when my hubby told me he found a couple more scrap pieces of bowling alley floor remnants in our storage building so I went to Lowes and bought a bunch of iron piping and got to work.

I wanted to create something to give away during a drawing that we are having during the grand opening of our shop so this is what I came up with.  I happen to love it and Im really looking forward to giving it away.

I cant wait to sit around that table at Thanksgiving with my family.  I love the holidays!  What are you thinking of serving this year?  Any traditions?

DIY Love Mirror Bedroom Updates

Greetings!  I hope you all had a lovely weekend.  Ive said this before but anytime I make a special change in a room, it always seems to inspire other changes, as well.

This past week I finally got around to changing out our master bedroom and bath door knobs and plates to the match the porcelain door knobs I put on our pocket door.  I got lucky and found just what I needed in my hubbys collection.  I was planning to just change them and be done with it but I was so happy with the results that I put a fresh coat of paint on the doors and then decided to also paint our bedroom Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore.

I love it so much in our dining room and since our master bedroom is right off the dining room, I thought it was a logical choice.  I just wasnt happy with the dark paint in our bedroom anymore.

Well, this led to me wanting to improve the art work in our room, as well.  Besides the barn door behind our bed, there really isnt much on our walls in the bedroom and truth be told, our bedroom is the room we stash everything in, though it doesnt look like that from the photos.  But Ive never shared the other side of the room with you, which is usually where everything is piled up.  :)

Anyway, I wanted to put a mirror of some sort above our Anthropologie inspired dresser, so, I scoured the internet with ideas and came across this photo.

I absolutely loved the somewhat whimsical, chic simplicity of it and knew I could create a fun version for our bedroom.  Heres what you need.

This mirror cost less than $30 to make.  I used two boxes of mirror tiles from Lowes, 1 x 2s and a  sheet of ceramic tiles.  (You need to remove the little square tiles from the sheet.)  First thing I did was build a frame with the 1 x 2s.  My frame is 3 feet x 4 feet, which is the size of 12 tiles.

I put the whole thing together with our nail gun.  Next, I attached a piece of scrap wainscot to the top of the frame with finishing nails.  Dont worry if it doesnt fit your frame perfectly.

Before I moved on to the next step, I wrote all our love sayings on each individual mirror tile with a silver permanent marker.  I chose our sayings from cards that I save from my hubby and kiddos.  I always save the cards they give me and this worked out perfectly.  Its best to have that step finished before attaching the tiles to the frame.  Then I applied mirror adhesive to the frame and began laying down my tiles.

These photos arent as great because it was late at night when I was working on this part.  After laying down all the tiles, I took the tiny ceramic tiles and glued them to each center connecting all four corners.

Then I painted the frame white to match the ceramic tiles.  After that, I cleaned off all my fingerprints, let it cure overnight flat on the ground and then attached a wire and two screw eyes to the back to hang it on the wall.  Heres how it looks in the room.

This mirror just makes me smile every time I walk into our bedroom.  Its fun and whimsical and I love how each saying reminds me of a special occasion with my family.

I also love the generous size of it.  You could also make a smaller version though, if you needed to.  I know this kind of art isnt for everyone but it sure makes us happy!

Have a great day!
Diana
